Echo fell in love with Narcissus, a young hunter renowned for his beauty and followed him through the woods. Narcissus, sensing her presence called out ‘who’s there?’. Echo could only repeat ‘who’s there?’ sorevealed herself to him but he cruelly rejected her. The goddess Nemesis is displeased with his arrogance and lures him to a pool where he see his own reflection. He is so enraptured by his own beauty that he can’t look away, but his love for his own reflection cannot be reciprocated so he drowns himself. The painting features an antique marble mortar and a fragment of a youthful face.
